Big Texan RV Ranch

Categories Campground Reviews

At the time we stopped at this location on June 16, 2017, as Stop #3 on Road Trip 2017, it was called Amarillo Ranch RV Park. Sometime after our visit, it’s official name was changed to Big Texan RV Ranch.

One of my criteria for choosing a campground is the amount of trees. (I’ve since refined these criteria!). There were definitely trees in the park, but not at our site. It was exceptionally hot the day we arrived, June 16, 2017. Thankfully, we stayed only one night.

This park has some character in the office, and nice staff, too. However, I was glad we were here only for one night. It was just the best place to stop in this part of the world when I was new to trip planning. The key problem with this place for me was the layout of sites. The pull-through site we thought we had was really one long site into which they parked two RVs back to back. That’s not really a pull-through if you ask me. It was also formerly a mobile home park that had been adapted to RVs, so the configuration of the sites was just…weird. We were packed too close together, and it was just uncomfortable overall. For what it’s worth, there are a total of 150 sites here, to give you a sense of the size of this place.

I’m still trying to figure out where I want to stay in Amarillo. It’s one of those places that is in the right place in terms of timing our drives across I-40, but… I sure wish I could find my happy place in Amarillo.

One of the gimmicks here (and at a few other nearby campgrounds) is a free limo ride to the Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery. If you can eat the 72-ounce steak in an hour, the meal is free. It’s Top Sirloin, by the way. Plus you have to eat the sides. Failure costs $72. (We ate something else, and sadly we did not have great steaks… a wee bit disappointed.)

Normally I’m a wine kind of gal, but… they didn’t have wine on the menu – just beer and cocktails. So I figured I didn’t want wine they might have. Instead, they are pushing the brewery thing, and when a gal can’t decide… this is what happens!

Yes, this is all mine! And we have a limo back to the RV park so no worries!

That’s all we did in Amarillo for this trip. Onward to the next destination, Oklahoma!
