Meteor Crater RV Park

Categories Campground Reviews

Meteor Crater RV Park is conveniently located a one day’s drive from Las Vegas so it has become our go-to park for our eastbound road trips. During our first stay there in 2017, I must admit I was not overly impressed, but it was certainly acceptable. So we keep going back!

After having much more experience with various styles of campgrounds since then, I find I like it much better now. It’s not big on amenities and there is way too much wind for my liking, but the park is clean and quiet. And there’s a lovely view when the clouds blow away.

When I say this park is not much on amenities, I mean that it’s not set up like a resort, which is perfectly fine. No pool, no fitness room. You cannot have a fire, which you wouldn’t want most of the year here anyway. I’m not crazy about the dog park (which has two separate sections) because it’s too plain and dusty for my dogs and has no shade. I preferred just to walk my dogs along the park perimeter.

This 71-site park does have exactly what you need when passing through–reasonably-sized sites and full hook-ups. Wifi is offered, but I usually rely on my cell signal for data. AT&T works better here than Verizon. A few tent sites are available as well that look rather nice. There’s a convenience store that also sells gas and diesel fuel.

Road Trip 2017

We picked this park as the first stop on our first major road trip with few expectations. It’s a nice, clean RV Park. There’s nothing else nearby besides the crater–no shopping or dining. But it’s a decent place to stop for the night in this part of Arizona.

We stayed only one night (June 14, 2017), so we didn’t have time to explore the crater on this trip. Dean promised me that next time we would visit the crater. And we did!

From here we went on to American RV Park in Albuquerque, NM.

Road Trip 2018

This park was also Stop #1 on Road Trip 2018 (May 18-20, 2018), when we were able to stay two nights so that we could explore the nearby Meteor Crater! Also, in 2018, we were traveling much more comfortably with our new fifth wheel.

Even with our bigger rig and tow vehicle, the sites are reasonably sized. Each site also has desert landscaping which is fine, but there are enough trees and grassy common areas to add some visual interest to the park so that it’s not brown everywhere you look.

Meteor Crater is just down the road from the park. Really – you can drive there in less than 10 minutes! It was fascinating to learn this is the first proven meteorite crater in the world and that it took until 1963 for the proving science to be generally accepted.

Our next stop is Route 66 RV Resort in Albuquerque, NM, which you can read about here.

Road Trip 2019

For Road Trip 2019, this campground was again Stop #1, and again we stayed two nights–April 15-17, 2019.

This year we decided to drive into Winslow proper. Although the park address is Winslow, the drive to town takes about 20 minutes.

Winslow is a town that has seen better days, but it was worth the drive to see and do a few things here.

We started with a nice lunch at the Turquoise Room in La Posada Hotel. The hotel was built in 1930 for railroad passengers and it’s still a beautiful little hotel.

We both had the Signature Soup which takes signature to a whole new level. Yummy! Black bean and cream of corn are the key components, and the signature itself is made of Chile cream.  Dean had beef tacos in lettuce wraps and I had carnitas. Of the two dishes, we both preferred the tacos.

We paired our lunch with prickly pear margaritas. Cheers! The Turquoise Room is decorated with all sorts of interesting artwork to enjoy while you dine. In fact, the hotel grounds have beautiful sculptures as well. There’s so much to look at here!

Furthermore, the Turquoise Room is a huge dining space so unless there is some big event going on at the hotel, I think you should be able to get a table easily without getting a reservation first.

Then we walked down the street so that Dean could… um… stand on a corner.

And with apologies to The Eagles, we only have a long bed Ford….

Something interesting that we only just learned about…the Trail of Whispering Giants by Peter Toth, a Hungarian-born sculptor. I guess we have a new bucket list. These wooden sculptures are spread out across the US, so we’ll just have to go find them! Because… why not?

From here we head over to our current favorite Albuquerque, NM stop-over, Route 66 RV Resort.
