We arrived at Stop #3 of Road Trip 2019 on April 19, 2019, and stayed two nights at the Amarillo KOA. This is also our third RV road trip that routed us through Amarillo, but our third campground in this area. However, it was the first time we stayed more than one night so that we could give ourselves a bit of recuperation time between driving days.

One of these trips I hope to find “The One” that will be our go-to spot in Amarillo, but this campground is not it. Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing outright wrong with it. It’s just not… special. And I keep hoping we can find one we really like in this area someday.

On the plus side, it’s a KOA Journey, so it’s set up to be easy to get to from the freeway and the sites are adequate for a short stay. It feels on the small side, but it has 105 sites. You can book online which makes it easy to arrange for the type of site that you want. It’s clean. The workers are friendly. And we get our KOA rewards points that get us a sizeable discount somewhere down the road.

We got a premium site, but that just meant that we had a brick patio to step onto. And I think it was a bit wider than regular sites as well. Otherwise, there wasn’t much premium about it.

It was incredibly windy here during our stay. In fact, we had wind every day in every location since leaving Las Vegas, and we’re getting weary of it. It’s just not conducive to enjoying the outdoors at a campground. On the other hand, there was major flooding in the Midwest during this time period, so we’d rather have wind!

We were right next to the airport as well. Which isn’t as bad as it seems. Our house in Las Vegas was under the flight path to/from McCarran Airport and the near-constant flow of planes flying by was a nuisance. Here it was interesting to see what was coming or going, and it wasn’t constant.

There was plenty of room to walk the dogs. Below you can see the section that was closest to us, but there was plenty of room throughout the campground for dog-walking.

One of the “features” of this campground was the neighboring horses. One was particularly curious about the dogs. In my opinion, it deliberately tried to get the dogs wound up just for fun. There IS an electric fence to keep the horses on one side and the dogs on the other.

Coyote Bluff Cafe

For some reason I no longer recall, we were not inclined to do any sightseeing on our “day off” in Amarillo. However, we were interested in trying some local food rather than the steakhouse we tried on our first RV stop in this town.

Dean considers himself a connoisseur of fine burgers, so I found him a proper hole-in-the-wall burger joint for lunch, Coyote Bluff Cafe. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday only, so plan accordingly. I’d seen some reviews that said it was a cash-only place, but that information is outdated as they did take debit and credit cards when we ate there.

The burgers were quite tasty. Both of us indulged in our own burger, but we shared a single basket of fries and onion rings because everything is well… Texas-sized! Dean the Connoisseur approved. And we didn’t eat the rest of the day.

We’re not really beer people, so we ordered wine. It’s the kind that comes in a glass with a peel-off lid. Okay, we didn’t expect a fine wine list, so… not really complaining. Just letting you know!

Dean did not approve of the restrooms here. I assume he meant that with regard to cleanliness as I didn’t go investigate myself.

After Amarillo, we continued to our next destination. In prior years, we would have gone to Oklahoma. In 2019, we headed across Texas instead with Sanger/Denton North KOA Journey as our next stop.
