New York City North/Newburgh KOA

Categories Campground Reviews

We picked this location, New York City North/Newburgh KOA as a convenient stopover point as we trekled northward from Gettysburg as part of Road Trip 2019. One of the intriguing features was the availability of a tour bus to Manhattan, but unfortunately we learned that tour was only offered on Fridays – at least during the time of year that we were there, August 6 – 8, 2019. Sad trombone.

But we were really happy with the campground here. The sites were laid out well and took advantage of natural landscaping to provide a bit more privacy between sites than you normally find, especially at a KOA.

Despite the inability to take a quick trip into the city, we saw there were a lot of other things to do in the area as well. So many things that I would love to explore in the Hudson Valley. Alas, a major thunderstorm hit the area during the two nights that we stayed here. We couldn’t even enjoy our beautiful patio site during our stay.

To add insult to injury, or more accurately I should say to add injury to insult, I managed a doozy on our first night here. Normally when I walk the dogs at night, I only use the flashlight when I need to see whatever I need to scoop up. I can see pretty well when walking around in the dark. Normally.

Of course, since this was our first night, I didn’t have a good sense of the lay of the land, and as I was heading back to the rig, I managed to fall right into the fire pit and scrape my shin on the bricks. Scraped to the bone. Owww! Note to self – don’t walk around in the dark in an unfamiliar location!

We did manage to sneak out between downpours to check out a local Italian dining establishment, Nu Cavu. There’s plenty of parking for those of us driving beastie duallys! It’s located next to an airstrip which might be interesting on a sunny day. We just saw lots of rain. But we enjoyed the veal Parmesan. Home-style cooking here, folks. Big portions – I couldn’t even eat all of mine.

Not much else we can say about the campground. It’s a medium-sized park at 160 sites and rated as a Holiday KOA. Just be careful and watch the trees so that you don’t wind up with roof damage. Despite that risk, I’d definitely go back for a longer stay to explore the area.

One more bit of info… Verizon data speeds were pretty slow at 3.27 Mbps. AT&T data speeds were better but not great at 13.7 Mbps.

Onward to our next stop near Lake George where we’ll settle down for a bit!
